Shoppers have started asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Mode what to buy before they ever open a store. Adobe's data, as reported by TechCrunch, shows traffic to US retail sites from AI sources rose 393% in the first quarter of 2026. In March, visitors who arrived from AI converted 42% better than other visitors.

How much of that reaches your store varies, so check your own analytics before deciding how much to invest. The direction is still clear enough to plan for.

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making your brand easy for these tools to find, understand, and recommend. Here's what it means for an ecommerce brand, and where to start.

SEO vs. AEO: what changed

A classic search result is a list of links. You compete for a spot on the list, and the shopper picks.

An AI answer works differently. It summarizes, cites a handful of sources, and often completes the shopping decision before anyone clicks. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can use "query fan-out," which means running several related searches across subtopics and then pulling in a wider set of supporting pages. In plain terms, the AI asks a bunch of sub-questions on the shopper's behalf. Your content can show up for questions you never targeted directly.

The technical bar is the same as for regular search. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and that's it. What changes is the emphasis. Clear, complete, consistent content wins more often than clever content.

How AI answers pick brands

Nobody publishes the formula, and each assistant works a little differently. So here's what's documented and what's our working theory.

What Google documents:

  • Your pages can be crawled and indexed, including by your CDN and hosting setup.
  • Important content is available as text, not only in images or scripts.
  • Structured data matches the visible text on the page.
  • Pages load and read well, and internal links make content easy to find.
  • Merchant Center and Business Profile information is current.

Our working theory, not a published rule:

  • Entity clarity. The assistant needs to know who you are, what you sell, and who you sell it for. Brand facts like your name, product lines, shipping, and return policy should read the same on your site, marketplaces, social profiles, and directories.
  • Third-party mentions. Reviews, roundups, press, and partner pages give an assistant more evidence about your brand than your own site can. Expect them to carry weight.
  • Extractable content. A direct answer near the top of a page, followed by detail, is easier to quote than the same answer buried in a long paragraph.

The AEO checklist for ecommerce

1. Answer real buying questions on product and category pages. Cover what shoppers ask before they buy: materials, sizing, compatibility, who it's for, how it compares, and how shipping and returns work. Pull the questions from customer service tickets, reviews, and on-site search. Our site search article covers using search queries this way.

2. Add FAQ and comparison content. Buying guides, "X vs. Y" pages, and "best for" roundups match the questions people put to assistants. Be honest about tradeoffs. A page that says who a product isn't right for tends to be more useful, and easier to cite.

3. Use schema markup that matches the page. Product, Offer, Review, and Organization markup help machines read your pages, as long as the values match what shoppers see. Price and availability in the markup should always match the page.

4. Earn brand mentions. Ask for reviews on third-party sites, pitch product roundups, work with partners and retailers who list you, and publish original data or expertise worth referencing.

5. Measure visibility. Write down 20 to 30 prompts a shopper might use, such as "best waterproof ankle boots for hiking" or "alternatives to [competitor]." Run them in each assistant every month and record whether you're mentioned, whether you're cited with a link, how you're described, and which competitors appear. Answers vary from run to run, so look at trends, not single results. In GA4, also look at referral traffic from sources like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.

Common mistakes

  • Treating AEO as a replacement for SEO. The same fundamentals feed both. If your pages aren't indexed or are thin, no AEO tactic will rescue them.
  • Blocking crawlers by accident. Check robots.txt, and also your CDN and bot-protection rules. A firewall setting can quietly keep crawlers out.
  • Letting facts drift. An old return policy on one page and a new one on another makes your brand harder to summarize.
  • Chasing tricks. Special AI text files and keyword stuffing aren't needed, according to Google's guidance, and they don't replace useful content.
  • Measuring once. Assistants and their sources change often. Re-check monthly.

Where to start

  1. Write your prompt list and run it today to get a baseline.
  2. Audit your ten best-selling product and category pages for clear answers and consistent brand facts.
  3. Confirm crawlers can reach your key pages.

If you'd like help, our SEO and AEO and generative engine optimization teams can run an AEO visibility review for your store. We'll check how you show up today, find the gaps, and map out what to fix first.
